Our work includes challenging institutional failures, litigating against government misconduct, and standing beside youth and families who face injustice at the hands of systems meant to protect them. Position Overview We are seeking a Volunteer Youth Advocacy Legal Counsel—a principled, relentless advocate who is unafraid to challenge abusive systems and institutions. This role is ideal for a legal professional committed to using the law as a tool for systemic change, especially in the areas of child welfare, government accountability, whistleblower protection, and human rights. Counsel will provide legal support to children, families, and whistleblowers across various jurisdictions, including through U.S. state and federal law, international law, and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), where applicable. Key Responsibilities • Provide legal representation and advice for youth and families in matters of: • Wrongful removal and CPS-related challenges • Child abuse, neglect, and institutional failure • Governmental misconduct and corruption • Represent clients in court, administrative hearings, and legislative processes. • Offer legal guidance on whistleblower protection for those exposing injustice in child welfare systems. • Investigate and litigate cases involving civil rights violations, abuse of power, and unlawful practices. • Apply UCC, state, federal, and international human rights laws in litigation and advocacy strategies. • Draft and review legal documents including pleadings, motions, appeals, and policy proposals. • Collaborate with social workers, advocacy groups, and community partners for comprehensive support. • Develop and lead “know-your-rights” training for families, youth, and community advocates. • Contribute to policy reform initiatives focused on child protection and public system accountability. Qualifications • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school. • Licensed to practice law in [Specify State or Jurisdiction], or eligible for reciprocity or pro bono status. • Proficient in child welfare law, civil rights litigation, UCC, and relevant state, federal, and international law. • Demonstrated experience in legal advocacy involving: • Systemic abuse or neglect • Civil or human rights violations • Government or institutional accountability • Strong litigation, negotiation, and communication skills. • Deep commitment to defending vulnerable populations, especially youth. • Ability to handle emotionally sensitive and high-stakes cases. • Experience in nonprofit, movement-based, or community-rooted legal work is a strong asset. • Willingness to work across jurisdictions or internationally as needed.
