The Georgia Tech Library invites applications for a flexible and innovative librarian to join us as a Metadata Librarian. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Content, Access and User Services, this person will provide strategic and technical guidance on cataloging and metadata practices for the Georgia Tech Library’s physical and digital collections. Excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, proactive communication skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities in a dynamic environment are required for success in this position. Applicants should be eager to shape change and should have an interest in the evolving roles of research libraries in the changing landscape of higher education.Position:The Georgia Tech Library seeks a collaborative and customer-oriented librarian to take the lead role in developing strategic cataloging and metadata initiatives for the Library. This person provides strategic leadership, consultation, training, and expertise in cataloging in a variety of metadata schemas for resources in all formats. Additionally, the Metadata Librarian works collaboratively with other personnel in the Library as well as with others outside the Library. This person will help provide long-term strategies to deal with MARC and non-MARC metadata initiatives and provide direction for staff in techniques and new methodologies, such as RDA and BIBFRAME. The overarching goal is to optimize discovery for scholarly content, owned or licensed by Georgia Tech and available through Open Access and cooperative arrangements.Responsibilities:Working with groups inside and outside the Library, develop long-term strategies to provide optimal access and discovery.Provide expertise and leadership to staff on original cataloging, copy cataloging, physical processing, batch loading, and database maintenance.Develop and implement procedures for new projects such as relocating materials to remote facilities, creating or acquiring records for materials digitized in house, retrospective conversions, properly preparing records for the ASERL Cooperative Journal Retention and the Collaborative Federal Depository Program projects, etc.Provide expertise to resolve catalog-related problems, keeping the customer experience as the most important consideration.Provide leadership in pursuing new opportunities for resource management, access and discovery and for the Library’s involvement in national programs.Lead projects and teams related to the discovery and access of Library content.Develop, communicate, document, and train staff on local metadata policies and procedures.Work with the Associate Dean, Content, Access and User Services and others to develop, enact, and evaluate plans that support Library Technical Services operations.Serve as the lead in exploring innovative tools and methods in streamlining processes for creating, cleaning up, and optimizing bibliographic metadata.Develop an expertise in linked data, semantic web applications, and ontologies for discovery of bibliographic data and information.Serve as a metadata consultant to larger library projects/initiatives. Work closely with other Library departments, Emory University Libraries, GALILEO, University System of Georgia Libraries, and other partners involved in joint projects.Advise in original cataloging and authority control.Required Qualifications:ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science, or equivalent advanced degree.Minimum of two years post-MLS or paraprofessional cataloging experience in an academic, public or special library utilizing current cataloging rules and MARC formats.Experience with an ILS and a national bibliographic utility.Effective leadership skills and proven experience with teams and projects.Effective verbal, written and presentation communication skills.Commitment to professional development.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional working groups as well as independently as needed.Preferred Qualifications:Experience leading projects and teams.Knowledge of metadata management tools (e.g., RDA, MARCEdit, OCLC Connexion, Access, authority control, batch processing techniques).Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo Systems.Faculty Status:The position will be appointed as a member of the Academic Faculty of the Georgia Tech Library, is non-tenure track and is subject to the review and promotion process for all Georgia Tech librarians and archivists. As a member of the Georgia Tech Library Faculty, the incumbent will have an effort distribution of 80% excellence in assigned duties, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the Library profession or the Institute. The librarian in this position must participate actively in professional and scholarly activities including Library, Institute and professional committees, research and publication.Salary and rank commensurate with credentials and experience.
